Telangana builds world’s largest lift irrigation project at Kaleshwaram

The
youngest state in India, Telangana has again made it to the top
story by inaugurating the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project on 21st
June 2019.


The
project is designed to supply
water from river Godavari, serving up to 70% of districts in Telangana. With plans to start water pumping from next month, the project is expected address the agriculture, drinking water and industrial
needs of the
state.

The
mega project features lifts at six stages, from Medigadda, which is around 100m above sea level, to Kondapochamma Sagar, at 618m height.

On 8
March 2016, the Telangana and Maharashtra
governments signed an agreement, ending decades of differences over the Godavari water distribution issue, pushing the concept of Kaleshwaram project into a reality.

Major
works at the Asia’s top lift irrigation project, including the construction of barrages, and pump
houses have been completed within three years.

According to Telangana government, Kaleshwaram requires around 4,992.47MW of power for the
lifting of two TMC water and is planning to arrange for the
supply of adequate power.

The
release said: “For the first time in the annals of the country’s history, the
Telangana State Electricity organisations are using 139MW pumps in the
Kaleshwaram project at package-8 Ramadugu. Nobody ever used such a capacity pump in the country.

“To
complete all the works on the Kaleshwaram project in a record time, works are going
on 24 X 7. Under the projects, three barrages, 19 reservoirs, and 20 lifts are
constructed for the storage capacity of 141 TMC.”

The
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has inaugurated the project in the presence of the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan
Mohan Reddy at the inaugural ceremony.
